Technology vs having an experience

Found on No Baggage Challenge Blog :

Social critic Susan Sontag wondered if — given the ubiquity of
point-and-shoot cameras in the mid-late 20th century — “having an
experience becomes identical with taking a photograph of it”; media
theorist Marshall McLuhan noted that electronic media (and television
in particular) “has a way of arranging the world in such a way that
nobody needs to go to the trouble of experiencing it.

Tasmania

The island Tasmania is located 240 km below the southernmost tip of Australia. Lots of dramatic nature and scientifically proven some of the cleanest air in the world. Enough walking trails for weeks and weeks of bushwalking…

Reachable from Melbourne in about an hour by air or with an overnight sailing on the Spirit of Tasmania.

The Great South West Walk

A long distance walk (250 km) that is less known than the famous Great Ocean Walk, supposedly because it is not as close to the larger cities (it is halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide) and nature is not as wild.

The good bit about it is that The Great South West Walk is less crowded with tourists, there are no guided tours and the campgrounds and track itself are free to use. Sounds like a good alternative for the (seemingly) over-regulated  and expensive Great Ocean Walk.

Crossing the Nullarbor

The Nullarbor (no trees), an epic part of Australia that has had my attention for a while already.

There are 2 ways to cross the vast emptiness between Adelaide and Perth that the Nullarbor is just a part of: by train on the Indian Pacific or by car (You’re not fair dinkum until you’ve driven the Nullarbor). The distance from Adelaide to Perth is 2800 km. Just for comparison: the distance Amsterdam to Moscow is about 2100 km… Sounds like a great thing to do…

Introduction

First post. Welcome!

this blog will be the sequel to the web-log I wrote during my first visit to Australia. With another trip coming up in January, I will use this new blog as a notepad with links and thoughts at first, and as a traditional travel blog while in the sky and on the road.

Hopefully, it will turn into an interesting gathering of information about traveling in South- and West- Australia, Hong Kong and all other places that I may visit.
