Home sweet home

My souvenir US Mailbox survived the trip home and is now in use!

And how lovely to have a properly stocked kitchen again:

Waterfall galore today!

Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi, Skógafoss, the black-sand beach at Vik and I also caught a glimpse of Eyjafjallajökull.

Hveragerði hot springs bubbling away…

Storm

Pretty serious weather around Denver International Airport; lightning all around. Where is my plane?….

End of the work-week

Last day in Boulder, celebrated with a walk along the Mesa trail from the lab back to downtown. Nice views of the famous Flatirons along the way and the feeling of proper summer. What a difference from last week’s snow & ice!
Colorado was nice, next stop: Iceland…

The Foam Dome

And now for something completely different: I spent the night in the Foam Dome high up in the mountains of Colorado. The domed house was designed and built by Boot, a now 92 year old WWII fighter pilot who was a very interesting host.
Certainly very high on my list of most special places where I have stayed so far…

Dolores River Canyon

Who needs Grand Canyon if you can also drive along the Dolores River Canyon? Interesting side note is that this is an area that was extensively mined for uranium. Some of that was used for the Manhattan Project…

Gorgeous gorge

A drive around the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park today and on to the small town of Nucla, some 150 miles further. The Black Canyon is a super-narrow gorge that is so steep and narrow, that not much light can enter so that it seems black at places. The many views were, eh, gorgeous!

On the road in Colorado

First day in Colorado: 8 hours of driving, including a visit to Monarch Crest at an altitude of 11312 feet (3448 meters) and to the town of Crested Butte. So far better than anything I have seen in the USA. Looking forward to the coming days…

A museum full of globes

The geographers wet dream: I found a globe museum in the Herrengasse in Vienna, after a meeting at the Geologische Bundesanstalt. How fitting…

Jodhpur, the blue city

And this one certainly has had a lot of blue paint applied.

On the train again

Jaisalmer – Jodhpur on the slow train today through a lot of barren land.

Paths less-traveled around Jaisalmer

A little walk away from the town and a different world again. No-one trying to sell anything here, just happy to see some foreigner.

Jaisalmer

First day in Jaisalmer today, after 10 hours on the train yesterday. This included home-made food from some very friendly fellow passengers.

Jaisalmer is the most pleasant city I have seen in India so far. The air is clean (for Indian standards anyway), the sky blue, and it’s residents are far more laid back and less pushy than in the rest of Rajasthan. So laid back that I was actually invited into the home of a retired tailor for tea and dinner and was introduced to his whole family. Time very well-spent!

Situated in the middle of the Thar Desert, the nights are also fresh, which is nice for a change.

A quiet day for a change

With all the crowds around, this was a nice and quiet day: climbed the hill to one of the temples and some relaxed reading on top (unfortunately, the view was still quite limited because of the smog). After that: a chai at a small stall under a tree in the evening sun. Lovely really and very welcome.

Dust and fire

Most places here have one thing in common: dust and smoke everywhere, hurting eyes and throat. Guess that is how life in a desert town is as no-one seems to mind… And the food is still awesome: chapatis straight off the fire!

More colorful people of Rajasthan

The mela is coming into full swing, with more and more colorful people arriving every day.

Others have been living in tents just outside the town for all their life and little prospect for ever leaving…

Pushkar camel mela

Many people and many sights

To Pushkar

First walk over the Pushkar camel fair after a few hours in the train and on foot. Lots of camels here! And monkeys!

Long walk through the Pink City

that really is not pink at all. It must have faded in the sun… Lots of things to see though, and the view from the Nahargarh Fort was a bit China-like:
